Douglas Fir is the strongest and most durable of softwoods. It is commonly used for doors, windows jambs and millwork due to it's uniform grain and ability to resist warping when quarter sawn. it stains nicely and is available in plywood form as well. $$

Red Cedar

Red Cedar is one of the softest woods, however is common for exterior applications due it's resistance to rot. It is not ideal for anything that sees a lot of wear (chairs, table tops, desk tops) $$$
