Hardwoods are the most popular choice due to their natural colors, grain, durability and strength.


Red Oak
Red oak is the most popular hardwood due to the high contrasting grain. It absorbs stain nicely and evenly, making it a popular choice for pieces needing a specific color. $$$

White Oak
White oak is a very durable and waterproof wood. Once used to make ships and Whiskey Barrels, white oak has natural proteins allowing it to avoid rot, making it ideal for kitchen or outdoor applications. $$$$

American Walnut
Walnut has become extremely popular in the last 10 years due to it's warm contrasting colors. It is naturally dark, so is a popular choice over stained woods. $$$$

Maple
Maple is a very durable wood, with consistent color and grain. Maple is often used in pieces where a simple looking wood is desired. $$$

Birch
Paper Birch, locally sourced in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, has a distinct contrast in color between the sapwood and heartwood, with the ability to add character to a simple piece. It stains nicely and is the prime choice for painted pieces. $$

Cherry
Cherry is a common hardwood used in modern cabinets and furniture. It naturally gets darker in sunlight, however it absorbs colored stain uniformly. $$$

Poplar
Poplar is a softer hardwood and is often used as a secondary wood for drawer boxes and concealed parts, but can be stained, lacquered or painted. It's unique cream color is a step up from pine or spruce. $$

Softwoods
Softwoods
Softwoods are a more economical option, often popular in rustic type pieces.


Pine
Pine is the most popular softwood due to it's availability. Knotty Pine is a wood often found in more cabin-style pieces. It is prone to denting and has a lot of knots. $

Douglas Fir
Douglas Fir is the strongest and most durable of softwoods. It is commonly used for doors, windows jambs and millwork due to it's uniform grain and ability to resist warping when quarter sawn. it stains nicely and is available in plywood form as well. $$

Red Cedar
Red Cedar is one of the softest woods, however is common for exterior applications due it's resistance to rot. It is not ideal for anything that sees a lot of wear (chairs, table tops, desk tops) $$$

Re-purposed barnboard
This repurposed barnboard is planed and power brushed to flatten and remove any grey and dirt, bringing out the natural aged color and texture of these old fence boards.
